Theology of a Modern Heretic

An ordinary man's unconventional belief about God and his existence.

What are the consequences of doing wrongful acts?

According to Christianity, if you follow Moses’ Ten Commandments, it will lead you a better life. The Ten Commandments itself are guide posts for living. However, if you carefully study it, you will notice that these commandments root itself from the Law of Cause and Effect or the Law of Karma. The Ten Commandments tells you not to steal, kill or lie, else, you’ll suffer the consequences.

So, what is karma?
Karma is a concept of action understood as that which causes the cycle of cause and effect. This simply means that in every action, there is always an equivalent reaction. The events that have been happening to our lives are always caused by a previous act or decision that we have made, either deliberately or subconsciously.

The accomplishments that you have attained are surely the results of your effort and hard work and by the same token, the suffering and agony that you are going through is simply a consequence of your action/s.

What you sow, so shall you reap. Plant good seeds and you will harvest healthy crops.  Act in good faith and you will gain goodness in return but when you proceed with malicious objectives, the consequences will be the same as your intentions.

However, a lot of people would argue about this. People would complain why they are suffering so much yet they believe that they have been doing the ‘right’ thing. They insist that they cannot recall an act, decision, or instance which might have caused their suffering. And most often they tend to hold ‘God’ accountable for their pain. They blame it to his ‘will’, crying ‘thy will be done’ even though it injures them. Yet they fail to observe the fact that their agony has always been triggered by their own actions and decisions. Or perhaps, are we just pretending not to notice it because we cannot accept and admit of our own failures, thus we point it to our God?

When your house burns down, will you blame God for making you forget to close the gas which caused the fire? When your child fell into the pool and drowned, will you condemn God because of your negligence?

Then you will ask,

‘How about incidents like a mad man in a shooting spree killing several students in a university? Surely they have not done anything to deserve it.’

Or,

‘In your example about the kid drowning in the pool, the kid didn’t even have an idea yet of what is right and wrong and certainly haven’t done anything ‘sinful’ that would lead him to his unfortunate death. Was his death caused by Karma as well?’

Our world is governed by several irrefutable laws and facts which includes the Law of Karma or the Law of Cause and Effect. It is also a fact that everyone is endowed with Free Will. Unfortunately for the individuals in the situations presented above, they became victims of someone else’s free will.

The guy in the shooting spree exercises his free will to gun down those students. And in return, as a karmic result, he is either shot or sent into prison or sentenced to death. The parent who negligently forgot to close the door towards the pool which caused the death of his child, in a way, has exercised his free will. Though he did not intentionally leave the door opened, he always had a choice to make sure that everything is safe for his kid.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the consequences of your actions will come back to you a hundred fold. Consider this example:

You decided to help someone who is in dire need. Who is literally dying and doesn’t have the money to have himself admitted to the hospital. And because you have more than enough, you aided him and paid the hospital bills. From your perspective, it was just nothing and wasn’t that difficult for you to do. However, from the point of view of the recipient, he acknowledges that gift as a life saving act. He felt that he is indebted to you and naturally, he will try to repay your kindness. He may not be able to pay you in cash but probably through service and in kind. He will probably spread the news about you on how generous you are. Though you didn’t expect it to happen, your reputation within the community has now been well established. People will look up to you and will be nicer to you. Take note, you helped the guy because you have extra money to spare. How much more if you give, not out of excess but out of self-sacrifice, imagine the impact of your actions. A good example of this is Mother Theresa. She genuinely dedicated her life in helping the poorest of the poor. And in return, the whole world moved towards compassion and love.
